Sustainability in the

Sustainability at ISAR Klinikum

In the context of climate change, sustainability and environmental awareness are becoming increasingly important. The German healthcare sector in particular accounts for a significant proportion of the nationalCO2 footprint. For this reason, we at ISAR Klinikum want to take responsibility and continuously anchor the idea of sustainability in all areas.

In order to continuously improve our environmental performance, we have created a staff unit for sustainability at ISAR Klinikum. Together with our “Green Team”, we are committed to continuously developing our sustainability measures. When implementing all sustainability measures, we focus not only on ecological, but also social and economic aspects.

In all our measures, we identify with the mission statement of the state of Bavaria, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. Our status quo report describes the sustainability measures implemented by ISAR Klinikum to date. In addition, the main contributions to the UN sustainability goals have been identified and presented in a report based on the categories of the German Sustainability Code (DNK)

In March 2023, ISAR Klinikum was recognized as a “Best Practice Hospital” as part of the “Green HospitalPLUS” initiative. The “Green HospitalPLUS” initiative is a sustainability tool for Bavarian hospitals and clinics. We have already implemented numerous requirements in the areas of energy, environment and people and are well on the way to becoming a “Green HospitalPLUS”. We look forward to continuing to make our contribution to sustainable development in the healthcare sector in the future and to actively promote climate protection.

Concrete measures for sustainability

Logo: Too good for the garbage canAs part of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s national strategy to reduce food waste, we support the following measures to promote greater appreciation of food :

We have established a digital food ordering app at ISAR Klinikum, which has enabled us to optimize food planning and discontinue our paper menus and paper order slips.

We also rely on the start-up Querfeld, which supplies us with around 50% of the organic fruit and vegetables used at ISAR Klinikum. With the support of Querfeld, we ensure that fruit and vegetables with minor blemishes are not rejected. In this way, we reduce food waste and support the producers. In 2023, we were able to save over 5,000 kg of fruit and vegetables by working with Querfeld.

Sustainable catering at the ISAR Klinikum is part of the Bavarian map of the Competence Center for Nutrition (KErn), which shows good examples of reducing food waste in communal catering. The KErn is an institute of the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL) in the department of the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism (StMELF).

In housekeeping and the kitchen, the cleaning products were completely switched to more sustainable alternatives. Products were selected where no loss of effectiveness or performance could be detected. The cleaning products in Dr. Schnell’s Ecolution range are ultra-high concentrates, which reduces the weight that our employees have to carry. The packaging bottle is made from 100% recycled materials and there is 80% less packaging waste overall. This minimizes storage space requirements and transport volumes. The remainingCO2 emissions are offset through a climate alliance with Dr. Schnell, making us 100% climate neutral.

Logo ecoturbinoIn our reprocessing unit for medical products, we use cleaning and disinfection devices that are characterized by an intelligent water management system and the reduced need for cleaning chemicals. In addition, the processes have been optimized so that up to 2,400 liters of water can be saved every day. The basic cleaning of instruments was switched to an ultrasonic bath, saving 7,500 liters of water and almost 30 liters of cleaning chemicals per year.

The ISAR Clinic already has 140 shower sets equipped with ECOTURBINO®s in use. In a self-test, water consumption per minute was reduced from 16 to 9 liters. In addition, the risk of legionella and the formation of germs can be significantly minimized by the turbulence of the water and a special drainage function. In addition, aerators are also used in the patient rooms, which limit the flow rate of the hand basin taps to 5 liters per minute.

We already obtain 100% of our electricity from renewable energy sources. Energy efficiency is also to be further increased, for example through the continuous expansion of LED lighting and motion detectors or the use of electronic devices with lower energy consumption. We carry out regular energy audits at ISAR Klinikum in order to identify specific suggestions for improvement based on the criteria of energy and financial savings.

Logo Kimberly ClarkA working group was formed around our waste management officer to optimize waste disposal at ISAR Klinikum. In close cooperation with our waste disposal companies, we have optimized the disposal and colour scheme. This has already enabled us to reduce waste to a minimum and significantly increase our recycling rate. For our cardiac catheter laboratories, we participate in a recycling system that enables valuable precious metals to be recovered as recyclable material. Our collaboration with our waste disposal specialists makes an important contribution to climate protection and environmental conservation. In 2023, 117 tons of primary raw materials were saved as a result. In addition, we were able to achieve energy savings of 758.4 MWh andCO2 savings of 45.1 tons.

As part of the optimization of our waste management, we now also rely on 100% climate-neutral waste bags with a recycled content of 93%. By using the climate-neutralized waste bags, we were able to save 3228 kg ofCO2 emissions in 2023. The DEISS PREMIUM PLUS waste sacks achieve an optimal eco-balance thanks to recycled high-performance film. RemainingCO2 emissions are offset by DEISS through climate protection projects.

In the operating theater, we rely on multi-component systems for our materials, which has enabled us to increase our cost-effectiveness and efficiency. The so-called Kitpacks® contain all the individual components required in one set, which are not additionally packaged separately. On the one hand, this has made stock-keeping clearer and, on the other, has significantly reduced waste.

RIght Cycle LogoAnother measure to reduce waste is participation in the RightCycle™ program from Kimberly-Clark Professional™. Instead of disposing of used paper towels as residual waste, they are collected separately on site.

The separately collected paper towels are pressed into bales at a collection point. The bales are then transported to the plant in Koblenz, where the recycled fibers are used to manufacture new products.

In 2024, we were able to recycle 1.7 tons of paper towels – equivalent to the weight of 35 trees.
